Back in July,Alsina broke the media when he confirmed in an interview with “The Breakfast Club’s Angela Yee” that he was once in a relationship with Jada Pinkett Smith, with the blessings of her husband, Will Smith. The 27 year old opened up in his interview with PEOPLE, explaining that when the rumors on his relationship with the 48 year old actress started affecting his business and livelihood, he could no longer remain silent considering the fact that he has children to take care of. Alsina’s older brother, the girls’ father, Melvin, was shot to death in New Orleans back in 2010.

“I really am a private person. People have never known much about my love life because it’s not important. I never really cared about what people thought of me, but my personal life started to seep into my business life. There were certain falsities about me, and it affected my business relationships. I could understand why it would look like I’m reckless or disrespectful so it really started to affect my livelihood, and I’m never okay with that. I got three kids to look after. Kill me, hate me, stone me, but bury me an honest man. All I can do is tell the truth.

Following Alsina’s interview with Angela Yee, Jada PinkettSmith confirmed their relationship on an episode of her show “Red Table Talk” where she was joined by husband Will Smith. She explained during that episode that what had initially started as a healing process for Alsina, in the form of a friendship, later developed into a relationship, which she repeatedly referred to as an “entanglement”. According to the actress, when she initially started a friendship with Alsina four years ago, she and Will were at a rough stage in their marriage.

Alsina added in his interview that he has no regrets about sharing his truth and it was not intended to cause any trouble for the Smiths as he has deep respect for them and does not see his relationship with them as broken. It’s just a part of life, and it’s a part of the journey. There’s a lot of love there. Sometimes truth is complicated and difficult. But my relationship with them isn’t broken at all, he said.

Speaking on his current relationship status, August says he is now single and more focused on healing and being present for his daughters. Life is still unfolding. I’ve spent a lot of time in a relationship. It’s like the first time you’re back on your own type thing. There’s been a lot of rebuilding within myself, a lot of healing within myself that has had to happen. But I’m very okay.”
